My favourite concealers and why I’ll always love Lancôme’s Maquicomplet

Concealers

I’m always on the hunt for the ultimate concealer.

Aside from mascara, it’s probably the cosmetic product I spend the most time researching.

In fact, my concealer habit is verging on being out of control (in my opinion). I’m already making plans for my next purchase (Lancôme Effacernes Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer – cos, y’know, I sweat a lot in summer).

The main reason I wear concealer is to disguise dark circles.

Concealer truth #1: dark circles are rarely hidden by concealer. Unless, of course, you’re wearing the kind of waxy hard-core stuff that’s supposed to conceal tattoos. In which case you shouldn’t be putting it under your eyes (unless you have tattoos there. And, if you do, I recommend a psychiatrist).

I like to think my dark circles are a bit less obvious when wearing concealer.

Here, for your viewing pleasure, is me in my au naturel state. Dark circles and all. I’m wearing a tiny bit of lip gloss but other than that, I am MAKEUP FREE. Yikes.

This and the following photos were taken in daylight with a teensy weensy bit of lightening help from Photoshop.

I’ve assumed this ridiculous expression because it accentuates my dark circles and NOT because I think I look sexy/cool/mysterious or otherwise.

Concealer truth #2: I’ve watched countless videos on YouTube about how to correctly apply concealer to cover up dark circles and puffiness/bags and NONE OF THEM WORK. Especially the red lipstick hack (which I didn’t actually try and neither should you if you have any self respect).

With these things in mind, concealer colour and consistency are my priorities.

It’s also really important if it blends well. I use a little wedge sponge to apply mine. Do I look like I had a fight with a bag of flour? Does it make my face look like a flake-fest? And the ultimate #concealerfail DOES IT CREASE?

Try as I might, I continually return to my Lancôme Maquicomplet. It’s creamy, the colour is perfect (Light Buff, for the record), I can blend any excess all over my face without looking like a cakey mess and it doesn’t crease.

Does it cover up my dark circles? Well, it makes them less obvious. But none of my other concealers do a better job.

I’m wearing concealer on my right eye (your left) in the following photos and my other eye is concealer-free. I have no other makeup on my face.

I also own Maybelline Fit Me concealer but can’t bring myself to love it.

Maybelline Fit Me is a VERY popular product but (in my opinion) it doesn’t cover well, the colour’s too light and it emphasizes my flakes.

I’ve also heard wonderful things about NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer.

  1. I’ve been thinking of trying the Becca two step system: Under Eye Brightening Corrector followed by their concealer. It is on my list of future makeup experiments.

  2. My favourite all over my face and doubles as spot concealer is RMS Beauty un-cover up. RMS Beauty’s stuff is made of mostly food-grade ingredients, costs a pretty penny, but last forever, and my skin loves it. It blends and covers beautifully, lasts all day, and doesn’t make me break out. I now also use their moisturizing oil and un-powder.
